Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the physical demands of football and how sports science can optimise player performance. EPPP guidelines for benchmark testing are included, with specific details on how to conduct each testing protocol. Details on safe and effective training for strength and power, aerobic and anaerobic energy systems, speed, agility, and plyometrics, from both a performance and injury risk reduction perspective, are included. Practical guidelines for incorporating scientific principles into training regimens are provided, along with insights into how physical preparation evolves as players progress through different stages of development. This section concludes with guidelines for effective recovery from training and matches, along with details on how gamification can be used when working with academy players.
