Abstract
Ready Readers is a university-led, volunteer-supported, selective reading intervention delivered by trained undergraduate ‘Book Buddies’ to support primary-aged, disadvantaged or underrepresented Years 5 and 6 pupils in Southampton who have been identified by their schools as performing below age-related expectations in literacy. The programme forms part of Southampton Solent University’s outreach activity and aims to support pupils in the local community through one-to-one reading sessions.
The evaluation examined changes in reading confidence, conceptualised as a key foundation for literacy engagement and attainment-raising. A within-subjects pre–post design was employed with 31 pupils. Reading confidence was assessed using the Students Confident in Reading Scale from the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), alongside a PIRLS-aligned item measuring reading enjoyment. Quantitative analysis was supported by qualitative feedback from pupils and parents.
Results indicate an increase in pupils’ reading confidence and a positive shift in reading enjoyment following participation. Qualitative findings highlighted enhanced engagement with reading and the importance of supportive relationships with undergraduate volunteers.
