Abstract
Sonic Phonics has been designed for all children and adults who are learning to read or find reading difficult. It is also ideal for those with English as an additional language. Sonic Phonics is an innovative product that is providing teachers a new and valuable resource to help children learn more effectively both in the classroom and at home. Initial trials of the product were conducted in a number of schools which received very positive feedback. This resource for teachers and children - ages 5 to 11, was designed to make learning about phonics fun. Children can use the Sonic Phonic Sound Buttons to reinforce grapheme-phoneme correspondences, learn to enunciate sounds correctly, and even read and write words. The design has since been registered and the product was launched in the UK by Talking Products in 2011.
The Sonic Phonics set contains 51 electronic Sound Buttons that play individual letter and digraph sounds. The buttons allow pupils to learn correct letter sounds and explore combinations by building different words. The Holding Tray allows up to five buttons to be placed in a line to create words. The buttons also have built-in magnets to allow them to be used on other surfaces such as magnetic white boards and fridges. The intention is that children will learn the sound both in the classroom and also take individual letters how to practice pronouncing full words. A supporting video shows the shape of the mouth with the digraph sound.
The design is a two part moulding which holds the circuit board, provides easy access to the replaceable batteries, a front mounted speaker, a front mounted push to activate button, a smooth wipeable surface, a magnet for attachment on rear mounding, a image card holder on the rear.
