Performance analysis integration in the coaching process

This chapter provides an overview of effective performance analysis provision and, with support from current literature, discusses contemporary applications of performance analysis. Providing context to the integration of performance analysis to support coaches, the chapter overviews both subjective and data-based analyses that are available. Within this dialogue, the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches are presented, with relevant considerations allowing performance analysts to consider how they can best support their coaching staff and players. Two distinct methods are presented: subjective analysis that relies on the interpretation of match or training performance through video or live observation, and data analysis that requires statistical analysis on data that is collected through notation. It argues that effective performance analysis support should employ both of these approaches to improve the accuracy and understanding of individual and team performance. This chapter also considers how the findings from the analysis process can be communicated effectively to players and coaches. Finally, the chapter closes by providing specific guidance on how to calculate descriptive statistics to help analysts interpret data effectively.
