    Abstract

    This short article emphasises Nicholas Lanier's important place in the history of Stuart court culture and reviews a symposium held in February 2010, convened to consider the same and discuss the newly recognized and complex portrait of Lanier. The article identifies, for the first time, the subject of the 'painting within the painting' by Hendrick van Steenwyck as being 'Paul and Silas Imprisoned (Acts, 16).
