Abstract
Collaborative project with students from Winchester School of Art, Lineage, was exhibited at Southampton City Art Gallery as part of British Art Show 8 outreach programme.

LINEAGE: A PERSONAL AND COLLABORATIVE JOURNEY INTO THE HISTORY OF SOUTHAMPTON’S SHOWMAN COMMUNITY
Design: James Asprey, Lowena Hoskin, Alice Kumagami, Curtis Rayment, Aisling Sam - Winchester School of Art
Inspired by the British Art Show 8 in Southampton, I embarked on an exploration of my connection to this historic city as an artist-researcher.
My starting point was the work of Ciara Phillips, whose vibrant, screen-printed art often involved collaborative practice. I wanted my research to engage the wider community, so I invited family members to join my journey and collaborated with students from Winchester School of Art to create the final piece.
Meeting with both immediate and extended family members allowed me to share memories and photographs. Through these images, faces that were once unfamiliar became part of my personal history.
My family had lived in Southampton for over a century, operating a fairground throughout that time. The images shared with me deepened my understanding of my family’s connection to Southampton and my own ancestral roots here.
This booklet collected images of my family’s history in the city. As time passed, the identities of people in old photographs faded, leaving behind anonymous faces. While this article didn’t fully recount the story of Southampton’s showman community or my family’s lineage, it served to preserve a nearly forgotten story.
