Introducing the Ecological Player Development Framework for football

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Published conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter conceptualises the Ecological Player Development Framework (EPDF). Inspired by the English Premier League's Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP), the EPDF aims to provide a long-term model to support the development of football talent, from younger ages to senior level. We propose three main stages: a) Discovery Stage (DS) (Under-7 to Under-11), (b) Progression Stage (PS) (Under-13 to Under-17), and (c) Transition Stage (TS) (Under-19 to Under-23). Grounded in contemporary coaching pedagogies, each of these stages incorporate specific methodologies that promote a holistic development of the young football player. The EPDF considers the individual characteristics of growth, maturation, and development from a player long-term perspective, and potential biological and relative age effects (RAEs) that every young person may experience. The emphasis of the EPDF is on Ecological Dynamics, supported by Nonlinear Pedagogy (NLP), the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA), Deliberate Play, Game-Based Approaches (GBAs), and the Periodisation of Skill Training Framework (PoST), to integrate the development of technical, tactical, physical, psychological, and social skills. Overall, the EPDF reflects the EPPP's ambition of developing young people who can succeed on and off the field.
