An exploration of intersex characters in Indian cinema

Intersex has been neglected in Indian media, especially in films. This research study produces a historical account that examines the visual representation of intersex characters, in Indian films, as a reflection of Indian society. It critically evaluates the narratives of Indian films, having apparent and ambiguous intersex characters, using a filmmaker and scholar’s perspective, to examine the role and responsibility of this medium in educating, while also entertaining, viewers. It gathers new knowledge on the less visible subject of intersex and their issues in Indian society. In conclusion, this paper asserts that mostly portrayed negatively as pimps, dancing beggars, criminals, and forced prostitutes, the intersex characters have not been conceived in other genres in Indian films.
