A STUDY INTO THE EFFECTS OF HOW MACHINED STRESS CONCENTRATIONS INFLUENCE THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF BALSA WOOD

Research output: Published contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

    Abstract

This paper reviews an investigation into the effects of inducing stress concentrations into flexural balsa wood specimens, in order to evaluate a comparison between the manufacturing methods of drilling and laser cutting. Furthermore, the effects of inducing the stress concentrations are evaluated and compared to finite element analysis (FEA) models. The study is a preliminary investigation, and shows that further experimentation is required to optimise the flexural behaviour characteristics of balsa wood.
