Abstract
Three leading courses in the marine industry will be introduced and reviewed, namely the Diploma in Practical Boatbuilding at the International Boatbuilding Training College, the BEng (Hons) in Yacht and Powercraft Design at Southampton Solent University, and the MEngSt in Yacht Engineering at the University of Auckland. Particular emphasis will be given to the links between those courses and the industry, and their recent implementations to maximise graduate's employability. In order to illustrate the benefits of modern virtual learning environments, the case study of an eight month full-time distance learning research project realized in collaboration with two radically opposed academic institutions across the globe will be presented.
