A Storm is brewing: Life on board continues despite rough seas (Image Presented)

Abstract

Working on a cargo ship entails many difficulties for the crew members on board, including difficult working conditions, long working hours and the inescapable reality of heavy weather. As part of my research that focuses on career development among seafarers, I sailed on a number of ships. During one of those voyages on the Mediterranean Sea, the weather was changing and a bundle of clouds emerged out of nowhere. Seafarers do not have the luxury of taking shelter or escaping it, as the ship is both their workplace and their home. In other words they cannot stop their routines due to the ship’s rolling and pitching. This image is an attempt to capture some of the realities of seafarers’ working lives, aiming at raising the awareness about those hard-working people and their daily sacrifices in order to ensure our convenient way of life by providing over 90% of everything we have…
