ToC Creative Film Industry

Project Details

Academic description

The growth and density of the creative industries around the Solent (south central) region of the UK is currently driving the growth of jobs and graduate opportunities in the region. The scale of investment in film and high budget television production around the west of London, an area geographically adjacent to Solent, will result in the development of the largest production base in Europe. Meanwhile, ScreenSkills tells us that there is a shortage of craft skills in the UK even while the universities along the south coast are producing more film production graduates than any other region in the UK. Consequently, there is a clear and evident opportunity for the region to capitalise on provision of production services and to tap into the large-scale investment in film production that is flooding into the UK. Yet the creative industries within the region, and film production in particular, are underserved and lack suitable organisational, logistical and leadership infrastructure to seize this opportunity.
This project aimed to develop an evidential basis for a Theory of Change (ToC) that would inform strategic conversations about the growth of the creative industries in the Solent (south central) region of the UK. A secondary aim of the project was to undertake an exploratory network mapping activity that would inform the subsequent design of a methodology for the analysis of the regional creative industries as a value exchange ecosystem.
Focusing on film production as a subsector of the regional creative industries this project will deliver a series of data gathering events enabling the project team to engage in a consultation process with members of the film production community. The proposed research activities will also enable an exploratory study that will inform future approaches to mapping value exchange networks.
