Academic description
Regenerative Business is an emerging discipline that has the potential to move our business models from one of harm to one of regeneration. Many businesses consider themselves to be ‘green’ businesses. Identifying and trying to limit their harm to the environment with their business practices is clearly not enough, in terms of activity and resource productivity. Current economic models are focused on growth. If we go back to the Brundtland Commission definition for sustainable development “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (Brundtland Commission, 1987) we can see frightening evidence that our climate is changing with the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. It is clear that we need to focus on the redesign of products and services to eradicate waste and pollution, keep materials in use and to regenerate natural systems. The recent COP26 meeting indicated the work that needs to be done at all levels to adapt and mitigate for global warming, and to keep global temperature rises to below 2 degrees.
This project is therefore exploring the concept of a regenerative business circle using a test set of 7 + businesses, leading them through a basic circular and regenerative business planning process through collaborative learning and knowledge exchange. In order to test the concept and build on a longer programme of work for A Wessex wide regenerative business circle.
