Project Details
Academic description
This project aims to collect data on 'new mediating technologies and deskilling in the UK' (under the broad topic of Digital Inequalities), with a focus on bringing together several experts (from different professions) who share the fate of having mediating technologies replace or assist aspects of their work or daily work tasks. The project is focussed on working-class communities in three locations (London, Liverpool and Margate) and aims to understand the impact new mediating technologies have on precarious workers (with expertise in a number of settings). Research participants include: a precarious actor from Margate who is working in the British acting agency (he featured in 'The Crown' and has had little work since); a part-time retail supervisor working in a Liverpool supermarket chain; a labourer based in Tower Hamlets, London, who 'picks up' occasional work. There are other research participants recruited via two organisations I am affiliated with: Alt Valley Community Trust (a charity in
Liverpool) and Toynbee Hall (a policy and research organisation in Tower Hamlets, London). The funding will help secure research participants and assist in data collection, by covering expenses incurred by both participants and researchers, and providing a 'seed' or foundation for a much larger study planned for 2023 (I intend to apply for British Academy funding). Collecting 'fresh' data on this important topic is the key aim of this project.
