Project Details
Academic description
The proposed research project seeks to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, focusing on the representation of equality, diversity, and inclusion both in front of and behind the camera. The study aims to assess the extent to which forms of representation have evolved throughout the MCU's existence, spanning over a decade of filmmaking. This research project holds significant importance in the ongoing discourse surrounding representation in the creative industries.
By critically examining the MCU's approach to equality, diversity, and inclusion, the study can contribute to the broader academic and industry discussions on representation in popular culture.
The proposed research will employ a mixed-methods approach, integrating both quantitative and qualitative techniques to comprehensively:
• analyse the diversity of characters in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability from the inception of the MCU to its most recent releases.
• investigate the diversity of the creative teams, including directors, writers, producers, and other key crew members.
• analyse the potential impact of diverse creative teams on the portrayal of characters and narratives.
