    Academic description

Person-centered planning supports inclusion of individuals with communication difficulties in the design of activities relevant to them (McNaughton, 2019). However, people with language restrictions, cognitive impairment, or communication difficulties are often excluded from research. Older adults with communication difficulties may not have access to programs that provide support and adaptations to facilitate safe and enjoyable participation. Talking Mats is an innovative, award-winning communication tool based on extensive research that was designed by Speech and Language Therapists. Talking Mats can increase a person’s capacity to think about and communicate effectively about things that matter to them.

This research involved a qualitative study with older with communication difficulties or use augmentative and alternative communication. Talking mats were used to elicit older adults’ specific preferences and needs in relation to active recreational participation. We recruited one participant, who successfully engaged with the activity, and provided insightful information about their experience of engaging in recreational activities.
The experience of the project has highlighted a number of barriers to recruitment in relation to studies with older adults. Some of these are described in more detail below. We hope to explore this work further, and have engaged in extensive literature reviewing to find out what is known about this issue.
