Tom Slevin is an academic in the School of Creative Industries at Southampton Solent University. He previously worked at Royal Holloway University of London and University for the Creative Arts. He has significant teaching and research experience and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Tom's teaching and research interests focus around visual culture and photography. More specifically, he is concerned with the artistic avant-garde, modernism, the representation of the body, vision and representation, posthumanism and the philosophy of technology.
Tom has previously won University teaching STAR & Union Awards for 'Most Innovative Teacher', 'Student Voice Champion' and 'Outstanding Team', whilst nominated for 'Outstanding Teaching' and 'Excellence in Research & Knowledge Exchange'. As Course Leader for BA (Hons) Photography between 2018-2020, the team achieved 'National Student Survey' satisfaction scores of between 89% - 96%.
His research has been externally reviewed as ‘world-leading’ (REF 4* quality) and has been entered into the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise and 2021 Research Excellence Framework.
He is currently Director of Studies and/or advisor for four PhD students.
He has been an external peer-reviewer for Intellect, Bloomsbury and Routledge (books) and the journals Fashion Theory, Philosophy of Photography, and Arts.
He has worked as an external examiner for Falmouth University between 2018 - 2023.

Tom is also a trustee for the Southampton-based arts charity 'In Focus: Education and Development' (https://www.infocusedu.co.uk). Since 2015, In Focus have provided arts-based learning for young people considered at-risk or vulnerable, and those not in education, employment or training. In Focus also work within local communities to support a wider offer of photography-based learning for all ages and abilities.
