Stephen is a lecturer in cadet education where he teaches electrical and electronic engineering. He started his career as an apprentice electrician and spent six years working on electrical projects before returning to further education.

Stephen holds a BEng (Hons) (2017) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Galway, Ireland. 

Prior to joining the Solent University in October 2024, Stephen worked at the National Oceanography Centre in the Deep Platforms department. There he worked with robotic underwater vehicles such as remotely operated vehicles and gliders. He has sailed on both UK research vessels the RRS James Cook and RRS Discovery.

He has done multiple sea going trips with the UK’s deepest diving ROV dedicated to science, ROV Isis, where he was the lead electrical and electronic engineer and ROV pilot. He also worked with Slocum Gliders as a pilot. When not at sea he was responsible for providing specialist electrical/electronic engineering skills and design knowledge for the development, purchase and commissioning of new high value capital equipment.

Research interests

Stephens research interests lie in switching in electrical transmission and distribution systems, high-voltage engineering and testing, power electronics and deep-sea robotic systems.
