Research interests

Emma's teaching philosophy centers on fostering an inclusive, student-centered, and collaborative learning environment. She adopts a blended learning approach that integrates innovative pedagogical practices, diverse assessment methods, and experiential learning strategies to actively engage students and deepen their understanding. Emma emphasizes the practical application of theoretical concepts, drawing on real-world contexts to enhance relevance and retention. Her approach supports not only academic achievement but also the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and lifelong learning skills.

 

 

Personal profile

Emma has been with Solent University since 2008. She graduated from the University of Southampton with a BA (Hons) in Fashion. She later accomplished a Master of Arts in International Fashion and Textiles with Marketing in 2010, which allowed her to study within international schools of fashion such as Institute Frances De La Mode, Paris, and the Hoog School Ver De Kunsten in the Netherlands. During her MA studies, Emma was awarded a scholarship towards funding her studies by the Textile Institute, Guild of Weavers.

Before joining Solent University, Emma worked within the UK fashion brand sector for 10 years, for UK and Japanese brands across roles within buying and production for multi-product areas, from men’s to women’s and childrenswear.

As part of Emma's ongoing personal academic development, she has worked with Central Saint Martins,Istituto Marangoni,  developing BA and MA short course workshops and the London College of Fashion as a dissertation supervisor.

Teaching

Emma has taught a range of fashion branding, law, marketing, business, promotion, innovation, brand management, buying, Multi and Omni channelling modules across the School of Art, working predominately with BA (Hons) Fashion Management with Marketing, BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Merchandising and BA (Hons) Fashion Beauty and Media.

Emma is the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) Lead for the School of Art and has worked closely with course leaders to successfully map multiple undergraduate programmes to CIM accreditation standards. Her work has supported the integration of CIM qualifications across diverse subject areas including Music Business, Media Production,Fashion Beauty and Media and  Fashion Management with Marketing. Emma now teaches CIM across a range of undergraduate courses and contributes to both Level 4 and Level 6 CIM-accredited modules, ensuring students gain valuable industry-recognised credentials alongside their academic studies.

 

Bids & Funding 

  • Horsham Market Towns Programme ( £5000 bid win) : In 2021 Emma was part of an innovative new programme, called the Horsham Market Towns Programme (HMTP). A series of online webinars and training sessions for local buinesses, which was  focused  on enabling businesses to adapt to changing trading conditions  and was fully funded by the EU’s Reopening High Streets Safely Fund.Tghe program supported more than 50 businesses across Horsham in West Sussex, providing support to local high street businesses as they navigate their way through the Covid-19 pandemic (Solent 2023).

 

Community engagment 

  • REVO CertHE in Retail and Leisure Place Management: In 2024 Emma joined the REVO teaching team. 

    Created specifically for the retail and property industry, this de facto entry level qualification has been developed in conjunction with industry experts and the Revo Educational Trust. It provides retail place managers with the practical skillset and knowledge to manage and operate the retail and leisure assets that sit at the heart of our communities ( Solent 2025) 

 

Research interests

 

Emma's learning pedagogy and research focus is on developing an inclusive and collaborative student learning journey through a blended learning approach, with an emphasis placed on fostering the particle application of theory to real-world learning as an essential element of a student’s learning journey and environment academic teaching and learning. In the conferance papers, posters and talks Emma has been a part of her focus is on how utilising new and innovative teaching methods, different types of student learning journeys, assessment and practical strategies support real-world learning.​
