Organisation profile

The Department of Film and Media at Solent University is at the forefront of cutting-edge research in film, screen studies, and media, with a particular emphasis on gender politics and contemporary cinema. Our research output, ranging from published works to impactful contributions to REF2014 and REF2021, reflects our commitment to advancing knowledge and shaping discourse in these dynamic fields. Through collaborations with leading scholars, engagement in prestigious fellowship programmes, and active involvement in professional associations, we continuously push the boundaries of scholarship while enriching our research-led curriculum to provide students with unparalleled opportunities for academic and creative growth.

The work coming out of the department varies from monographs to peer reviewed journal articles, edited collections and creative practice research. One colleague, for instance, was recently awarded a prestigious British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship for a gender-based project on #MeToo era film culture and practice. Other colleagues are a leading scholar in Agatha Christie studies, a contributor to House of Lords Select Committees, leaders of international research networks, convenors of special interest groups from the British Associate of Film and Television Screen Studies (BAFTSS) and a lead for the Creative Practice Network for the Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association (MeCCSA).

The Department of Film and Media has long supported the wider research environment at Solent and is home to the successful Contemporary Screen Studies Research Group. Besides fostering an active research culture, we also have a research-led curriculum that has developed with colleagues’ research informing practice, analysis and specialist content across numerous modules.
