'The Body, "Biocepts", and Technology' ('Body/Mind' Conference, Norwegian Sculpture Biennale, University of Oslo, November 2013.)

    Description

This talk, given at Oslo University and later published in Anthology: Anatomical Theatre. begins by considering the recuring phrase 'Nosce te ipsum' ('Know thyself) in early illustrations of anatomical theatres. The Cartesian belief was that one's soul could be revealed within the body. However, within modernity, the excavation of the body as a site of knowledge overturned the mind-body dualism, and discovered that one's 'mind' was produced through embodiment. Indeed, this essay goes one step further and proposes that one's body is also co-extensive with the technology it uses: the mind, body, and technology are fundamentally interconnected terms.
