Description
I presented a talk titled "The Woods Metaphor, Photography, and Self-Expression in the Digital World" as part of the New Methodologies: Narrative, Time, and Everyday Experiences online seminar series at Solent University. This series explored innovative research methods related to narrative, time, and daily experiences. In my presentation, I discussed how fairy tales, particularly the "woods" in Little Red Riding Hood, symbolize the treacherous journey of self-discovery for women, influenced by traditional gender dynamics. I drew parallels between these mythical woods and the digital world, which, like the woods, offers both liberation and societal pressure. The digital realm, while providing space for self-expression, perpetuates themes of self-objectification and the silencing of women, with online harassment disproportionately affecting them. Through practice-based research, I explored these themes in my artwork, using self-portraiture to juxtapose fairy tale woods with modern-day digital spaces. My works, posted on social media, engage with both the empowering and suppressive aspects of online identity and the ongoing challenges women face in these digital "woods."Period | 28 Feb 2024 |
